Crescent-chested Puffbird (Malacoptila striata)

 

Synonyms: Bucco striatus, Greater Crescent-chested Puffbird (if M. t. minor is treated as a full species)

 

 

Malacoptila striata is restricted to eastern Brazil. The range is disjunct: M. s. striata occurs in the Atlantic Forest region from southern Bahia to Santa Catarina; M. s. minor in northern Maranhão and Piauí in the northeast. This species inhabits interior and edges of moist tropical and subtropical forests, including tall second growth and bamboo; up to 2,100 m. The plumage is mainly brown with cinnamon streaks over the head, back, and wings; a distinctive black-and-white breast band. Length 17.5-20 cm; weight 41-47 g. M. striata nests in burrows excavated in banks and roadcuts; sometimes camouflages the entrance with leaves and sticks. Nesting season is mainly October through December. The clutch contains 2-3 eggs. This puffbird hunts from perches in the lower strata and undergrowth, taking insects and other invertebrates; follows army ant swarms.
